An Interior Watershed Assessment procedure (IWAP) for the Barrierre River Watershed is the first phase in a multi-phase project which is currently in progress. Other phases of this project include a Sediment source survey (active), Terrain Stability Mapping (active0, an Access Management Map (active), a Watershed-Level and Component Project objectives report (active) and a proposed Riparian Assessment (1997). All of these assessments are part of an Integrated Watershed Restoration Plan to provide the information required for the Prescription and Major Work's phases. The primary objectives of the IWAP are to: 1) Assess the conditions of the watershed using the IWAP Guidebook's (1995) hazard indices and develop recommendations which will restore and/or rehabilitate past environmental damage and mitigate further damage. 2) Increase the participation of local First Nations in forest and environmental management. 3) Increase the pool of locally available, trained staff for work in the emerging field of watershed planning and assessment. watershed assessment, forest management, watershed management |
