Abstract/Description or Keywords | The Similkameen River Appraisal Level Study is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 is an engineering and environmental analysis of three options for water storage. The engineering analysis for each option describes features of the structure are described including the type of dam site geology, spillway, low level outlet, penstock, and powerhouse. In addition, appurtenant information such as access requirements and preliminary construction considerations are discussed. The environmental analysis addresses the following aspects of each water storage option: ユ Land use ユ Water quality ユ Aquatic resources ユ Terrestrial resources (wetlands and wildlife) ユ Recreation ユ Cultural resources ユ Flooding effects on infrastructure and private property Volume 1 also provides a brief history of water storage options previously considered and gives conclusions to the report as well as recommendations for further study. Volume 2 is an independent water supply study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that identifies water demand and storage needs in the Okanogan basin, and also analyzes the three dam options. The study includes a characterization of climate, current water demand, and water supply shortfall of the Similkameen River Basin and portions of the Okanogan River, and quantifies the effects of a proposed dam of three potential sizes. There are minor inconsistencies between Volumes 1 and 2 of the report, a few examples are outlined below: テ In Volume 1 the dam options are identified as ムLow Dam', ムMedium Dam', and ムHigh Dam' reflecting the differing heights of the dam crest. In Volume 2, these dams are described as ムsmall dam', ムmedium dam' and ムlarge dam'. テ Volume 1 states that Shanker's Bend is located at RM 10.7, Volume 2 states RM 10.5. テ Volume 1 calculated the モactive storageヤ of each dam to be 1.3 million acre-feet 138,000 acre-feet and 20,000 acre-feet for the High, Medium and Low Dams respectively. Volume 2 has calculated these figures to be slightly larger at 1.4 million acre-feet, 150,000 acre-feet and 24,000 acre-feet, respectively. |
