In August 1995, BC Environment issued a contract to Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd., under the Watershed Restoration Program for an assessment of the Hedley Creek watershed. This report summarizes the results of the application of the Interior Watershed Assessment Procedure (IWAP). The watershed assessment procedure was based on the Forest Practices Code Guidebook version dated September, 1995. Application of the assessment procedure was subcontracted to Dobson Engineering Ltd. with GIS support provided by Weyerhaeuser Canada Ltd. Headquarters Division in Kamloops. The IWAP is considered a Level 1 assessment and is intended to be an office analysis that may determine the potential for cumulative impacts resulting from past forest development. The results are derived from characteristics of the watershed based on topographic maps and historical forest development from forest cover maps. It is important to recognize that the results of the office assessment indicate a "potential" for hazards to exist. The results should be confirmed through field inspections prior to being used for operational purposes. The objective of the Level 1 IWAP is to assess the potential for cumulative hydrologic impacts on the Hedley/McNulty Creek watershed associated with previous forest development and road construction. There are four primary categories that are assessed which include: 1) Peak flows; 2) Surface erosion; 3) Riparian buffers; 4) Mass wasting (landslides). watershed assessment |
