Abstract/Description or Keywords | The purpose of the BC Dam Safety Program is to reduce the risks to people, property, infrastructure, cultural values and the environment that are associated with the design, construction, operation, maintenance and/or decommissioning of a dam. The BC Dam Safety Program covers dams that are regulated under the Water Act. Regulated dams are those over a certain size, as specified in the BC Dam Safety Regulation, that are constructed across a stream or constructed off-stream and supplied by diversion of water taken from a stream. As of April 2014, there are approximately 1504 active dams regulated under the Water Act in BC. Dams 9 metres or higher are the responsibility of Victoria based staff and dams less than 9 metres are generally a Regional responsibility. There are a number of tailings dams, sewage retention ponds, dugouts and other structures that retain water but are not licensed under the Water Act and therefore are not covered by the BC Dam Safety Program. flood, erosion, debris flow, debris flood |
