Abstract/Description or Keywords Project No. KB96047-RE Rocky Mountain Forest District (Gold Creek)
Objectives: To obtain data on natural or "background" suspended sediment yield and turbidity in a representative selection of watersheds which are used for community water supply; To investigate and document the effects of road construction, maintenance, and deactivation, and of different silvicultural systems, on sediment production and water quality; To develop techniques for identifying sediment sources and development-related water quality impacts, and for monitoring physical water quality on an operational basis; To compare sediment budgets in typical watersheds with different bedrock geology and soil texture.
Experimental Design: Layout: Three measurement sites have been identified and prepared for instrument installation. in the Gold Creek Drainage. Gold Creek was selected as it has relatively fine textured soils and an undeveloped basin for control purposes. In addition, streamflow, sediment monitoring, and channel assessments are available or are planned as part of the water quality monitoring project being conducted by the City of Cranbrook, Ministry of Environment and Galloway Lumber.
Methods: Measurements include: Turbidity meters; Water level recorders; Automatic pump samplers; Sediment catch basins;
History: 1997 - Preliminary sample collection and site selection 1998 - Development plan and instrument installation 1999 - Data collection and analysis 2000 - Data collection and analysis 2001 - Data collection and analysis 2001 - Establish two snowcourses and a climate station 2008 - Final Report planned.
