Abstract/Description or Keywords | Since 1990, there had been five significant summer droughts and warm water events resulting in major Sockeye salmon pre-spawning mortalities, disease and loss of reproductive fitness. There were predictions of more frequent & longer droughts in future on account of climate change and variability. Great Central Lake Dam already provided for optimal fisheries flows to offset drought impacts on salmon, steelhead and resident fish, but there were serious concerns about aging infrastructure and a suitable ownership arrangement. The historic fibre mat in Alberni Inlet was also expected to be a potential additional threat to sockeye migration under adverse river and oceanographic conditions. |
