Abstract/Description or Keywords The Ash Water Use Plan includes the recommendation to release pulse flows to improve
steelhead passage over Dickson Falls. This monitoring program is a directed research program
that will determine whether pulse flows improve steelhead passage over Dickson Falls, and what
magnitude and timing of release is most effective. This report provides the results of the third
year of the 5 year monitoring program.
During 2007 two pulses were released, one of 10 m3
/s (cms) magnitude between August 19 and
22, and another of 20 cms magnitude between September 23 and 25. Snorkel surveys to
enumerate steelhead trout were conducted between August 18 and September 27 in four sections
of the Ash River between Elsie Dam and the confluence of the Ash River with the Stamp River.
Additional spot swims for were done at Dickson Falls (July 5 and 17) and Lanterman Falls (July 5)
to confirm steelhead presence for steelhead tagging purposes. Observations of leap attempts at
Dickson Falls were performed to compare passage attempts, success, and migration routes during
the pulse flow release and non-release periods. For each of the two experimental pulse flow
releases, four one hour observation events (07:00 to 08:00, 08:00 to 09:00, 12:00 to 13:00, and
13:00 to 14:00) were made during each of three periods. For the 10 cms release, these
observations occurred during the pre-release control period, the ramp up, and the peak of the
pulse. For the 20 cms release, these observations occurred during the pre-release control period,
the ramp up, and the ramp down.
