Abstract/Description or Keywords | The San Juan River watershed, located near Port Renfrew on the west coast of Vancouver Island (Figure 1), has been the focus of intensive watershed restoration activities since the mid-1990s. Projects have been completed through various partnerships involving TimberWest, Weyerhaeuser, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection (MWLAP; formerly the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks), Pacheedaht First Nation, the BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF), the San Juan Enhancement Society (SJES) and the San Juan Watershed Steering Committee. Figure 1. Location of the San Juan River watershed, Vancouver Island. Work conducted by BCCF during the 2003/04 fiscal year included: • coho smolt enumeration at Lens Creek side-channel; • stream enrichment of Harris, Hemmingsen, Lens and Renfrew creeks; • monthly water sampling (June-September) in enriched streams to measure changes in water chemistry; • fish sampling in upper Harris Creek to compare growth of steelhead fry in enriched sites versus untreated control sites; • monitoring fish use of spawning gravel placed in the Lens Creek side-channel in 2002; • monitoring beaver activity in Lens and Four Mile Creek side-channels; and, • effectiveness monitoring of LWD and boulder enhancement sites in Harris Creek. |
