The development and testing of a component-based water chemistry simulator is presented. The model represents the culmination of a comprehensive study of water chemistry processes conducted in small subalpine watersheds in the southern interior of British Columbia. A topographical hydrograph simulator, the UBC model, was used as the basis for the model. Empirical relationships between chemical concentrations in forest floor runoff, groundwater and interflow, and associated hydrological parameters and outflow rates were developed to model the chemistry of flow components. Resultant streamflow chemistry was calculated as a weighted average of the chemical concentrations of the flow components.
