Abstract/Description or Keywords | The Water Management and Use Study is the first project to be undertaken in Phase 2 of the Okanagan Water Supply and Demand Project initiated by the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB) and its federal, provincial and First Nation partners. This project has been designed to address concerns regarding the sustainable use of water in the Okanagan Basin. The goal of the Okanagan Water Supply and Demand Project is to determine how water is currently used in the Basin and to be able to forecast future supply and sustainable use. In 2005 Summit Environmental Consultants Ltd. (Summit) completed the Phase 1 project that summarized existing information and data and provided a strategy to achieve the overall goals of the larger project. Based on the recommendations in the Phase 1 report, the OBWB issued a Request for Proposals for the Water Management and Use Study and awarded the contract for the study to Dobson Engineering Ltd. (Dobson) in July 2007. This report summarizes the results of the work undertaken by the Dobson team and describes the モstate of the basinヤ regarding current water use and how it is managed. The study area is the Okanagan Basin (the モBasinヤ) upstream of the Zosel Dam on the Okanagan River near Oroville, Washington. This is the same study area as the original Okanagan Basin Study undertaken by Canada and British Columbia that was completed in 1974. The study utilized the Basin map produced in the Phase 1 report that divided the Basin into five zones and 81 nodes or points of interest. The study objectives were: 1. To develop a thorough understanding of water use and management in the Okanagan Basin and prepare a report that describes the current state of the basin in this regard; and 2. To develop a database reflecting water use and management at each node in the Okanagan Basin (i.e. 81 points of interest) on a weekly basis for 1996 to 2006. The results from the study will support a Water Balance Model to be developed for the Basin. A database on water use is required to calibrate the model. |
