A flowslide involving more than 2.5 million m3 of sensitive glaciomarine sediment occurred near Terrace, British Columbia (54° 27_ N, 128° 37_ W) sometime between 1 December 1993 and 9 January 1994. Geotechnical measurements confirm the presence of quick clay at the site; mineralogical and geochemical investigations reveal its similarities to the quick clays in eastern Canada, Scandinavia, and Japan.Key words: quick clay, flowslide, glaciomarine sediment, rheology, British Columbia. |
