Abstract/Description or Keywords | For several decades, land and resource decision-making regarding rural British Columbia in general, and coastal areas in particular, have been antagonistic. In a historic step, several agreements were struck in April 2001 between the Province of British Columbia, First Nations from the Central and North Coasts and Haida Gwaii, local governments, and non-government interests.1 Consensus was reached on a definition, principles, and goals of ecosystem-based management (EBM).2 Parties to the agreements made a commitment to implement EBM in coastal British Columbia as a means of achieving “healthy, fully functioning ecosystems and human communities.” In support of this task, the Coast Information Team (CIT) was established as an independent advisory body to bring together the best available scientific, technical, traditional, and local knowledge. In achieving its mandate, the CIT embarked on a series of tasks, one of which was the collaborative design of an Ecosystem-based Management (EBM) Framework that is consistent with the April 2001 EBM definition, principles, and goals. |
