Abstract/Description or Keywords | T candidate watershed for fish passage assessment funding through the Forest Investment Account (FIA). M. C. Wright & Associates conducted fish passage assessments throughout the watershed from November 12th to December 10th, 2009. Mainline and major branch roads including BR265, Central, Darling, Flora, Gorge, Klanawa, Maxwell and North Fork mainlines were targeted first followed by accessible spurs and several deactivated roads. A total of 870 crossings were visited; 797 crossings did not qualify for full assessments and 73 were fully assessed. Of the 797 non-assessed crossings, 138 were open-bottomed structures (bridges, wooden box culverts, etc.) and 659 crossings did not qualify for full assessments (cross-drains). UTM and photographic data were collected for structures of this nature. O passage; proposed solutions were developed for each one. Two options for restoration were provided for each crossing, with pricing calculation estimates based upon span and price per unit for each replacement structure. Habitat gained index (HGI), channel gradient (>20%) and the potential existence of downstream crossing barriers were used to eliminate 36 crossings from the immediate candidate list for restoration. The 36 crossings recommended as candidates for restoration were put through a cost benefit analysis and given a priority rating between 1 and 3 based on habitat value (high to low respectively). Five priority-1 sites were identified, followed by 8 priority-2 sites and 23 priority-3 sites. |
