At the request of the McBride Community Forest Corp., this report was prepared by Clearwater Environmental Consulting. The focus of this report is to set out the current status of fish habitat and suggest future rehabilitation and enhancement opportunities for Dominion Creek. Overview: Dominion Creek is a small fish bearing tributary to the upper Fraser River. Dominion Creek flows through the Village of McBride, BC and is the community water supply. As well, the creek flows through agricultural lands upstream of McBride and is an important source of water for domestic and irrigation use. The Dominion Creek watershed has been and remains an important water source but has seen considerable impact from human activities since the early 1900’s. Although not a major fish producer, this stream is one of many small Fraser River tributaries that collectively contribute to the extremely valuable Fraser River fisheries resource. Due to its limited fish production capacity and historic impacts on the watershed, Dominion has not been the focus of past fisheries enhancement or habitat restoration initiatives. Through this report, it is the objective of the Community Forest and Village of McBride to look at options for restoration of historic fisheries values in the creek where possible and provide an opportunity to educate the local community and in particular youth, on the value of small streams and how to protect and restore them. This report and discussion are predominantly based on historic Dominion Creek information, personal knowledge of the watershed and discussions with Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans, habitat assessment and restoration staff. |
